Moving Into A Rental With Your Pet

Moving can definitely be a chore and moving with your pet can require some extra planning. Here are a few tips to help you make the move a little smoother for your beloved pet.

Finding A Pet-Friendly Rental
·      Look for housing that will welcome you and your pet
·      Have a Pet Resume which will include a little about your pet & docs such as vaccinations, neutering information, reference from past landlords, neighbors, trainers and your veterinarian and any other supporting docs.
·      Look for a fenced yard, walk friendly neighborhood and dog parks

Moving Your Pet
·      Get your pet use to a pet carrier if you will be using it to transport your pet, use a blanket or toy inside.  Once your pet is use to the carrier and feels that it is a safe haven it won’t seem so traumatic on moving day.
·      If traveling by plane make sure to check pet travel polices for any restrictions they may have and paperwork you must provide.
·      Have a chat with your vet on whether your pet may need sedatives to make for a more comfortable trip

The Big Moving Day
·      Try to remain calm as possible as pets usually pick up on the energies around them.  Keep your voice and body language as calm as you can.
·      Keep the routine as normal as possible
·      Give plenty of affection and praise to your pet to assure that nothing bad is happening
·      Pick a room in your new home to leave your pet in safely while you’re moving, this will help keep anxious pets from bolting out an open door. Make sure to leave the door closed and inform everyone to do the same.  Supply water, food ,favorite toy and a crate to keep your pet occupied and safe,
·      If you’re move will be a long move or a big job, you may want to consider boarding your dog at a kennel until your move is complete.

Home Sweet Home

·      Keep your pet in his crate or in a closed room until everything is moved in, and you have had a chance to create order.
·      Make sure your pet has familiar things upon arrival to the new place such as food, water, bowls , favorite toys, etc.

Good and thoughtful preparation will make the experience in moving easier for you and your pet, making it a happy move!!
